Cub News

District Cub Camp

Chalfont Heights

Over a week-end in May, 81 Cubs, joined by 9 Beavers on Saturday afternoon, got to know some of the countries that make up the Commonwealth family.

We started with a Wide Game on Friday evening.  Then we travelled to all 4 corners of the world, visiting Canada, Jamaica, Australia, Kenya, Sri Lanka, India, and the UK.  The Cubs learnt to herd and shear sheep, they made totem poles and mancarlas, they climbed the Himalayas and went on a Walk-a-bout in the Australian outback, they cooked Sri Lankan pancakes, went to the Ascot Races and had they hands painted.  The day ended with a great sing song including a wonderful human rendition of a tropical rainfall.  The next morning we found time to quietly reflect on what the Commonwealth means to us.  Despite the rather strong breeze, the Cubs were challenged in a series of games, including throwing a boomerang, and a relay trying to remember as many countries as possible, then there was a hectic race around Chalfont to answer questions on a Commonwealth team.  DO you know which commonwealth country donated the totem poles.  Then it was the closing ceremony with a few prizes and an investiture before we finally lowered the flag on a great camp.

Chief Scout Silver Award Presentations

On Saturday 22nd January the annual Chief Scout silver Award presentations took place at Earleywood scout campsite. This event is held for South East and South Berkshire Districts.

The event is held for our young members who have achieved the highest award possible in the Cub Scout section.

Most of these young members are now Scouts and all arrived in Cub or Scout uniform looking very smart and proud to be there. They were followed by equally proud parents and family members (including grandparents).

Young members and their families plus our volunteer helpers totaled 128 people who all enjoyed the afternoon to the full.

Anybody asking the daft question – is scouting still alive? Should have simply looked in through the window!

Each recipient had a brief citation read by his/her leader and was then presented with a certificate and a Chief Scout necker slide. It is very heart warming to hear what these young people have achieved within the Cub section.

After the presentations everybody enjoyed themselves wandering around playing fete type games and earning tokens that were then exchanged for sweets.

Hot dogs tea coffee and squash were also consumed in huge quantities.

My sincere thanks for the help and support given by leaders and parents and especially from South East and 2nd Bracknell S.A.S (Scouts Active Support) members.

Children-in-Need, 2010

Together with making over £100 for Children-in-Need they were able to put the event towards their Community Challenge!

DISTRICT CUB AND BEAVER

SIX A SIDE FOOTBALL COMPETITION

The annual football competition took place on Saturday 3rd july 2010. Due to exceptional circumstances there was a need to find a new venue. Sunningdale Parish council came to the rescue and the competition took place on their village playing field.

This proved a new and challenging experience in organizing the event, although with the usual help and enthusiasm from a fantastic team of scouters, Scout Actve Support  members and parents the day ended as another enjoyable and successful scouting event.

We still managed to arrange the weather as being dry and sunny although perhaps somebody should have turned down the heat a few notches. This was also a very special year, for the first time ever our Beaver section played a final for the honour of being the first colonies to claim the new runners up and champions shields, I very much hope that this will continue for many years to come.

Over the weekend 7th -  9th May.  cubs and a group of young scouts voted the adventure  weekend at P.G.L Hindhead a great success asking, can we do it all again?

With activities to name but a few – zip wire, fencing, quad bikes and giant swing provided our young members with activities adventures and challenges that will fill a special part in their memories for many years. As a most welcome plus the food   all provided and cooked was so yummy and also received many most favourable comments from the cubs and scouts resulting in very loud voices singing – i love sausage rolls stick them in the oven and they come out tasty etc etc

Would you believe? all of this and just one item of lost property left in my care

What do you do with a pair of wet dirty smelly trainers? thankfully owner found!

District Cub Scout Quiz 2010

On Saturday 20th March Cub Scout teams from across the District took part in the annual Cub Scout quiz at Earleywood Scout Campsite

The afternoon consisted of every team answering questions and also taking part in five activity bases that were fun exciting and encouraged team work also earning points towards their final total score.

Biscuits cake and squash also filled empty tums during break times and then after this fun and exciting afternoon two teams – 1st Ascot and 1st Sunningdale competed in a final round of questions for the purpose of discovering who would be crowned District quiz champions.

1st Sunningdale took this title and will now proudly represent the District at the county quiz in a few weeks time.

Once again I arrived home feeling so proud of my cubs while enjoying themselves they were all able to remember and give perfect manners and behaviour although there were one or two who arrived that I did not really expect this from! For sure they proved that they can.

My sincere thanks to leaders parents and Scout Fellowship who assisted and helped make this yet another successful enjoyable Cub Scout event.

SWIMMING GALA

On Sunday 29thNovember 9 teams of cubs took part in the annual swimming gala held at the Licensed Victuallers school.

The younger cubs competed in both width and length races and the older cubs competed in many and varied length races.

 5

The last two events of the afternoon were medley races - the younger cubs swam three continuous widths of different strokes and the older cubs swam four continuous lengths of different strokes.

We also had a medley demo from last years length medley champion Rami Elias now a scout took off from the diving stand and completed the four lengths in a very impressive 1.29. Even on a jet ski I could not catch him.

Rami also had the honor of presenting the certificates for this event and the medal for the new champion.

This year 1ST ASCOT gained the most points from all events and are now the very proud holders of the District shield.

My most grateful and sincere thanks to everybody who helped make the afternoon such an enjoyable successful Scouting event.

CHIEF SCOUT SILVER AWARD PRESENTATIONS

On Saturday 5th December South East and South Berkshire scout districts were at Earleywood scout campsite for their annual chief scouts silver award presentation. This being the highest award possible that can be gained in the cub section.

Twenty five cub scouts attended this year although sadly there were others who were invited being eligible recipients and could not be there for various reasons.

Supporting and applauding these young members were well over 100 family members, friends, leaders and South East Scout Fellowship members who once again supported and helped with this event so well.

All cubs many of who are now scouts had a citation read out by one of their leaders and were then awarded with a certificate and commemorative neckerchief slide.

Then followed the hotdog's and fete type games that everybody enjoyed, which earned tokens that were exchanged for sweets.

This year one of our recipients was not able to be there on the day as he has earned himself a part in the London Billy Elliott production and was in fact on stage while this event was taking place. His award was presented at District gang show rehearsals the very next day by our producer

The event concluded with a presentation from our County Commissioner Hamish Stout to a young member who undertook an incredibly tough personal challenge climbing 3 mountains in Africa and raising money for charity. Jack from 1st South Ascot was presented with a gold Blue Peter badge - not many of these are awarded and a Chief scout certificate for exceptional endurance.

County Cub Chess

On Saturday 14th November cub scouts from across the county arrived at Earleywood scout campsite with the purpose of representing their district at the annual county cub chess competition.

For all that is good and best those cubs attending truly were the very best ambassadors for scouting.

The afternoon consisted of hotdog's and a drink on arrival, five chess games each against different opponents, with two refreshment breaks and fun game times in between the chess matches.

After four rounds of chess there were two cubs holding maximum points who then played each other in the fifth and final game.

A nerve trembling experience although all cubs understood from the off that there could and would be only one county champion and one runner up.

The county champions for 2009 are READING CENTRAL

Runners up   MAIDENHEAD DISTRICT

My sincere thanks to everybody especially the cubs that helped make this such an enjoyable successful event.

DISTRICT CUB SCOUT CHESS COMPETITION

On Thursday 15th October the District Cub Scout chess competition took place at 1st Ascot Scout HQ.

All Cubs deserve a top score for their behaviour, enthusiasm and sportsmanship.

The evening consisted of every cub taking part playing 5 matches against different opponents and against those with the same or similar score.

Two break times were very much enjoyed with refreshments and a fun game that had a small prize on offer.

At the end of the evening the scores were carefully added up and the three cubs with the top score will now have the honour of representing our district at the county competition in November.

They were presented with shields for the champion and runner up and a medal for third place. All participants received a certificate for taking part.

I know that they will try their best and whether they win or not they will make us proud that they are Cubs from south east.

Jack and Mum take on three mountains in Africa

Jack Harley Walsh a cub Scout at 1st South Ascot along with his mother Sue who is a member of our District fellowship have just been on a trip to Africa, their challenge was to climb 3 mountains  Mount Meru 14,980ft, Mount Kilimanjaro 19330ft and mount Kenya 17057ft ( this mountain being the steepest and difficult due to winds and storms )

They completed all 3 climbs and in the process raised funds for Thames Valley air ambulance and Sebastian Gates action trust.

Congratulations to Jack and Sue

Update

“GOLD” BLUE PETER BADGE

AWARDED  TO 1st SOUTH ACOT CUB  !!

Jack, a 10 year old cub scout with the 1st South Ascot Group has won a very rare award

A “Gold” Blue Peter Badge has been awarded to Jack for his superb achievement in climbing three mountains in Africa during August this year - Mount Kilimanjaro 19,330ft.Mount Meru 14,980ft and Mount Kenya 17,057ft.(Mount Kenya being the steepest and most difficult due to winds and storms)

Jack completed the three climbs with his Mother Sue, a member of the SE Berkshire Scout Fellowship. Jack was the youngest person to climb Kilimanjaro, the highest mountain in Africa. Ten is the minimum age allowed.

He raised funds for the Thames Valley Air Ambulance and the Sebastian Gates Action Trust.

The only downside was that Sue had organised a Safari trip to follow, but by falling off a camel, Jack had first hand experience of what an Air Ambulance Service can provide, as he was air lifted to a hospital in Nairobi.

Well Done Jack, a terrific challenge and a fantastic achievement including being awarded a Gold Blue Peter Badge.

Scouting also recognized his achievement; Jack was presented with the Chief Scout’s Personal Award for outstanding achievement. The awards were presented to Jack, by Hamish Stout the County Commissioner, at the Chief Scout’s Silver Award ceremony at Earleywood on Saturday 5th December.

5 photo's here, also see Chief Scout Silver Award Presentations above.

I wonder how many hikes away badges Jack gets for that !, ed
