In Memory of Tom Agar
Some of you will have known Tom Agar from cub camps and the like, personally I will remember him as a cheeky young scout when I 1st joined 2nd Bracknell some 15 years ago, growing into a fine young man who tried to think of others before himself.
You will see from the attached that his brother Andrew (another ex 2nd Bracknell scout) is trying to raise some funds for the hospice that looked after Tom and to raise awareness of cancer that took Toms life.
South East Berkshire Scouts at The National St George’s Day Parade at Windsor Castle - Sunday 1st May 2011
The District was well represented at the National St George’s Day Parade in Windsor Castle on Sunday 1st May 2011.
Alex Richards, 20 year old from Bracknell who is the 2nd Bracknell Active support, Chairman was on parade in the Quadrangle of Windsor Castle, along with another 300 Queen’s Scouts from all over the UK, in front of a crowd of 2000 people including his proud parents and Grandparents to watch the Chief Scout Bear Grylls along with the Lord Lieutenant of Royal Berkshire, the Hon Mary Bayliss inspect the Queen’s Scouts.
The Chief Scout stopped to congratulate Alex on achieving the highest training award a Scout can obtain.
Steve Prower, GSL of 2nd Bracknell Scout Group, who was in the Quadrangle to witness the occasion said “This was the final piece of the jigsaw of Alex’s training, and I am extremely proud to have been able to encourage and support Alex in his hard work over the years to achieve this highest training Award in Scouting”
Also attending the Parade were two of the District’s Officers who had received top scout honours in the St George’s Day Awards: The District President, Gerald Hill received the Silver Acorn and the District Secretary, Derek Jackson received the Silver Wolf for their outstanding work for scouting over many years.
St George’s Day Came Early To Bracknell Town Centre
Despite the early start of the Easter school holidays this year the annual Parade of South East Berkshire Beavers, Cubs and Scouts from Binfield, Bracknell, South Ascot, Ascot and Sunningdale was held yesterday (10th April) through Bracknell Town Centre passing the Bandstand where the Mayors and Mayoress of the Borough and the Town Council took the salute along with Scout Commissioners. The parade then made its way up to Princess Square for a Service in St Joseph’s Church. The Service was led by Father Chris Routledge who welcomed the 400 members, parents and distinguished guests.
A highlight in the service was for the County Commissioner, Hamish Stout, to present Alex Richards with The Queen’s Scout Certificate signed by HM The Queen, the highest award a Scout can gain. The Group Leader of the 2nd Bracknell Scouts, Steve Prower in presenting the actual badge to Alex said “I am so proud that a lad who joined the Group at the age of 6 and worked his way through all the sections has gained this top award. He is an inspiration not only to the 2nd Bracknell Group members but to the whole District”.
Alex will be parading at Windsor Castle on 1st May in the national St George’s Day Parade which is only attended by Queen Scouts who have gained the Award during the year.
The charity collection raised £293.55 and will go to the local Alexander Devine Children’s Hospice Service
Ann Minchin, the District Commissioner said “The weather had again been very kind to us, and thanked all members, parents and guests for coming along in the holiday period. It was a pity some members had to miss the parade and Service as they
were on holiday this year”.
