SUPER SCOUT CAMPING COMPETITION WEEKEND 2-4th. May 2008
The Camping competition organised by Ken Robinson, a District Explorer Scout Leader, at the Earleywood Camp site was a huge success.
The weather was kind and all had a great weekend. The winning Patrol was from 6th Bracknell , and the runners up were a patrol from the 4th Bracknell Troop.
Ken said “I was delighted with the high standard of camping this year for this revived competition and we hope that in future years the competition will grow with more Groups supporting it. The winning patrol won by just 1 point”.
The youngsters had a great time and Natalie Sowerby, Patrol Leader of the 6th Bracknell patrol said.” “It was a competition to see which Patrol were the best campers. We were being judged on tidiness of patrol camping area, pitching of tent, camp safety, wood pile, camping gadgets, cooking skills and menus. All cooking had to be done on an open fire.
We all enjoyed the competition. It was good fun and there was always something to be done. A lot of excellent gadgets were made including gates, flag poles, washing up stands, tables, chairs. It was a very enjoyable weekend and I really felt that we benefited from it and became better campers .
On the competition side it was very close. Up until the last of 19 inspections with 6 different judges (including myself) it was neck and neck on points. It was only on the last inspection when 4th Bracknell lost out by one point leaving 6th Bracknell the winners of the competition. The final score was 1124 to 1125 so really it was a very close competition all the way until the end.
I thought the competition was a real success and I would recommend it to any groups that did not enter this year. It was a fun and enjoyable weekend for all involved”
Jonathan Taylor from the 4th Bracknell patrol, who were the Runners up, said “On the first evening we put up our tents and started our fire (that did not once go out!), sat around the fire and toasted bread.
The next morning we had to get up early so we could prepare to cook our breakfast before judging started. We then spent the rest of the day getting water, gathering wood and cooking our lunch. We had dinner early so we could gather round the campfire for a sing song. We were joined by Brownies who were also at Earleywood. After the brownies made their exit, we played a few friendly games and then went around 6th Bracknell’s fire and discussed various things.
The next morning we busied ourselves by making more camp gadgets such as a drying-up rack, mug rack, flag and flag pole. At 4 o'clock we had the final bout of judging. We lost by one point. Considering that we were two people down we didn't do too badly! The whole weekend was a lot of fun and I hope there is another“.
